Caux Collective Redirects: ‘The High Line’ New York City

In 1999, New York residents Joshua David and Robert Hammond set up a non-Profit charity group named ‘Friends of the High Line’. This charity transformed the abandoned New York Central Railroad, which runs through the lower side of Manhattan. Since 2009, this elevated platform, known as The High Line, has become a hugely successful new public space. As a promenade, beach and park hybrid, this aerial greenway has become a resounding triumph, with the urban park inspiring over £1.25bn of new economic activity along the it’s route.

Dinner in Harlem & Let’s Buy Happiness!

I finally got Jersey to let me take pictures of our food while dining out!  Although a  month has past since our last trip to NYC, the good food is still fresh in my mind. We ventured from Harlem to Lower Manhattan to Roosevelt Island and you can just never go wrong when eating in the best city in the world!

Red Rooster - Harlem

I had read about the owner of this restaurant and his cookbook in Vogue and Jersey had seen it highlighted on the Food Network. My man loves his fried chicken and had mentioned wandering over to Sylvia’s on previous trips (which is right next door). So we made reservations and enjoyed a beautiful night on the patio.

We started with a nice bottle of white wine and opted out of the appetizers but then there was a gentleman who walked around with a sample tray. We couldn’t resist and tried the Ceviches & Addis Tartar Tacos. Jersey of course ordered the Fried Yard Bird and I went for the Mac & Greens. YUM! We ended the night with Sweet Potato Donuts. Seriously. So good.

Gramercy Tavern

This place had been on my list for a while. It is located in a landmark building in Downtown Manhattan near the famous Flatiron and is frequented by the likes of Robert Deniro. We had reservations for the restaurant area but decided to eat in the tavern for lighter fare.

We started with the Baked Long Island Clams. I loved them but unfortunately they had scallops and Jersey can’t stand scallops! He ordered the Sea Bass for his main entree and I had the Butternut Squash Lasagna with Kale, Mushrooms and Pine Nuts. Top THAT!!

I was desperate to hear some jazz while in the city so after dinner Jersey took me to an old haunt of his - Arthur’s Tavern in Greenwich Village. A hole in the wall with great music and a laid back atmosphere.

We spent the final day with Jersey being the tour guide taking me to places I hadn’t been. We were in midtown and I noticed a tram and asked where it went and we were off to Roosevelt Island. The tram runs alongside the Queensboro Bridge and Roosevelt Island seemed like a whole different universe from Manhattan. Quiet, kids running around and families enjoying the day.

And the best part of Roosevelt Island? A slice of NYC pizza!

Monet’s Garden in the Bronx

I was lucky enough to make my third trip to New York City this year and immediately had a day trip planned after reading about the Monet exhibit at the NYC Botanical Gardens. It was pouring rain that morning which made for a beautiful overcast afternoon - something I don’t see enough of in the southwest. The gardens are in the Bronx just off the Fordham University campus. You literally forget you are in the middle of the city. It’s quiet, lush and GREEN (no concrete jungle)!  It really was amazing. It’s a perfect place to spend the day with a trolley that takes you through the park and a special place for the kids.

Much of the Monet exhibit was in the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory featuring live reproductions of Monet’s most famous paintings.

Claude Monet was a leading figure in the impressionist movement but he was also a botanist at heart. He lived for his gardens in Paris and Normandy.  Most of his most beautiful work on and off the canvas came from his gardens in Normandy.

When you enter the exhibit the have reproduced his famous pink stucco house and the gardens leading up to the home.

The flowers in this area are amazing.

Bridge Over a Pond of Water Lilies - 1889

The biggest treat was the reproduction of Water Lilies. These paintings sold for over $18.5 million a couple years ago. The gardens offered two full pools of lilies in various size, shape and colors.

There was also a Manolo Veldes exhibit with sculptures found throughout the garden inspired by the garden’s natural.
